Claim The Throne: Triumph and beyond
14/04/11 || Altmer
It’s so funny I’m listening to this. The reason for that is mostly that I went to Paganfest yesterday and thus saw everything that the folk metal world has to offer. That is to say, Eluveitie. (Unleashed and Moonsorrow also played, but I’ve never seen what’s folk about Unleashed and Moonsorrow’s set was boring). This band wants to be just like those bands. Epic, joyous folk metal. But… here’s the catch.
They are from Australia.
I don’t get this. What the fuck do you guys down in Oz have to sing about to play folk metal? You don’t have grim Norwegian forest trolls, you don’t have Irish folk instruments, you don’t have bagpipes. I don’t fucken get it. This is not funny. Leave folk metal to the actual folk countries. At least when Finntroll do it they actually use Finnish folk influences. You are from Australia. I don’t see where the Celtic influences are. And it doesn’t sound like you were using Aboriginal instruments.
Furthermore most of the lyrics and music on this album are a fucken gimmick and a joke. They have song titles like “Set sail on ale”. I think that says everything. It’s a bad gimmick. The music tries very hard to be a very keyboardy version of Ensiferum. Some of the vocals are absolutely ridiculous. I really just don’t get it. If you want to play folk metal, make it authentic. Don’t rip off some other fake folk metal bands, and call it a day. I don’t care if the songs are decent if it’s both gimmicky and plagiarism. Fucking hell, this is terrible shit. Even the completely unrepresentative logo, which looks like Darkthrone rat puke, is shit.
You know what, I’m done with this. This album is extremely, extremely silly and stupid and we don’t need it at GD.
Recommendation: Ensiferum needs to sue for copyright infringement.
